She was born in Moss Point, Ms., where she attended local schools. She received her BS and MS degrees from the University of Mississippi where she met her husband Tom on the first day of class her senior year. They were married 43 years.
She is survived by her husband, Tom; her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Kathy Donovan; her daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Jeff Smith; and grandchildren, Thomas Donovan III, Christopher Donovan, Hannah, Summer and Rachel Smith. She is also survived by two sisters, Ruth E. Bellknap and Joyce E. Bayley and a brother, William H. Elder.
Ms. Donovan was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, a loyal friend and a passionate supporter and board member of The Chattanooga Zoo (Friends of the Zoo) and The Chattanooga Ballet.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Missionary Ridge Garden Club. She took great delight in appearing in the ballet's annual production of The Nutcracker for the past four years.
As a board member of The Friends of the Zoo, she visited the animals often and held a special affinity for the Red Panda Nygallah whose name became her e-mail password. She and her husband were donors of the Donovan Interpretive Center at the Chattanooga Zoo.
She attended the Hixson First Baptist Church. An educator by profession, Ms. Donovan taught post secondary education in Chattanooga area institutions, including Norhwestern Tech (Walker Tech), Edmonson College, Chattanooga State Technical Institute and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga until her retirement in 2000.
