"MARRIED -- On the 29th ult. by the Rev. D. Gottwald, Mr. Alexander Underwood, of Menallen township, to Miss Maria Studebecker, of Huntington township." (Source: The Republican Compiler (Gettysburg, Pennsylvania) April 12, 1836, page 3.)
Alexander apparently was NOT a farmer as the sale on Saturday, the 27th day of September [1845] of the "Real Estate of ALEXANDER UNDERWOOD, deceased, consisted of A Lot of Ground, in the town of Bendersvile, Menallen township, Adams county.... The improvements are a Two-Story Log Weatherboarded house, a one-story stone kitchen, a Frame stable, a large log WAGON-MAKER'S SHOP [emphasis added] with other improvements. There is a fountain of excellent water in the cellar of the dwelling house."
Maria raised six children--three (Elmira Ann, Eliza Jane & Howard Alexander) born to her and first husband Alexander UNDERWOOD and three step-children (Nancy, George & Elizabeth) who were the issue of her second husband Jacob HARMAN and his first wife.
A farmer, Jacob Harman was born about 1814 and is said to have died on May 30, 1889. "Mr. Jacob Harman, of Menallen township, an old and highly respected citizen, died suddenly last Thursday having taken sick on Wednesday." (Source: New Oxford Item (New Oxford, Pennsylvania) Friday, June 7, 1889, page 6.)
