Captain of Company D, 9th Minnesota Infantry during the Civil War. He was born in Hol, Hallingdal, Buskerud, Norway, and was the son of Knud Ellingsen Skaro and Guro Eriksdatter. When he was 19, he came to America on the "Tricolor," which sailed from Christiania and arrived at New York on July 25, 1846.

During the Mexican War, from 1847 to 1852, he was a Private in the Army at Fort Snelling, Minn. He then staked out a homestead claim near St. Peter, Minn., and began living on it the following year. Four years later, he married Theodora Laumann on Sep. 15, 1857.

After the military company "St. Peter Guards" was organized in July 1858, he became its Captain. In June 1861, the company was sent to Fort Snelling, where it was organized to become the 2nd Minnesota Infantry, Company E. He was mustered in on July 5, 1861. He resigned on March 20, 1862, and joined Company D of the 9th Minnesota Infantry on Aug. 31, 1862. He became Captain of the company. In a battle near Nashville on Dec. 16, 1864, he was killed while leading his men in a charge.
