Catherine was known as Kay. She was the daughter of Russell Samuel Landis and Ruth Estella Beery Landis. She grew up outside of West Alexandria, Ohio and graduated from Lanier High School in 1939. In WWII, she joined the Marines and was the base projectioness at the San Diego Base. She met and then married S. Grant Stewart who was from Las Vegas. She had 4 children.
