H. Melvin Hukle, 74, died Thursday, January 17, 1987, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lexington. He was born July 30, 1912 in Lexington, KY to the late Jesse Turner Hukle and Jeanette Ball Hukle. He attended the University of Kentucky, playing basketball for the UK "Kittens," as they were called, which was also Coach Adolph Rupp's first year coaching at the University of Kentucky. (Kentucky beat Duke that year!) Melvin graduated from the College of Commerce in 1934. During World War II, he was a Master Sergeant in the postal service of the U.S. Army stationed in the Southwest Pacific area, specifically Australia and Papua, New Guinea. On June 30, 1945, he married Cecelia Marie Palmer and they had two children, Donald or Don and Linda. Melvin worked at the Lexington U.S. Post Office, where he retired as Superintendent of Mails. He designed and enacted the first zip code areas for Lexington. Melvin was an active member of the Lexington Lion's Club, involved in eye testing of school children and reporting. He was also a volunteer for the Lion's Bluegrass Fair. He was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Cely, children, Don and Linda (Bryan) Stopper, grandson, Christopher, sisters, Jeannette Hukle and Sally Creech, nieces Blakie (Tim) O'Dea and Irene (Ben) Zimmerman, and nephew, Tom Hukle (Karen). He also had two "adopted" daughters, Kennie (Amar) Gill and Lili (Bob) Riddle, whom he loved very much.
