Son of Joseph D. & Malinda (Cavin) McEver. Enlisted as Private in 16th Georgia Infantry, Company G in 1861. As Sgt, he was captured at Cold Harbor, Virginia in 1864. He spent remainder of Civil War as prisoner at Elmira, NY.
Married Ann Elizabeth Bell in 1867 and raised 12 children. Founding member of Oak Grove Baptist church.
