BURNHAM CLOUGH McCAFFREE '26

Capt. Burnham C. McCaffree, USN (Ret.), died on 27 May at the Naval Hospital, Jacksonville, after a long illness. A memorial service was held at All-Saints Protestant Chapel of the Naval Air Station, with interment in Arlington National Cemetery.
Capt. McCaffree was born in Canova, S. D., and attended Sioux Falls College before entering the Naval Academy, from where he was graduated in 1926. He became a naval aviator at Pensacola in 1930, and held his first command post in 1939 when he placed aviation squadron VO-5 in commission in battleships of the Atlantic Fleet. He was operations officer of Fleet Air Wing II when it was commissioned in 1942 at Key West, then he served on the staff of the Commander in Chief, in charge of the sea frontier desk.
From 1947-50 Capt. McCaffree was head of the Aviation Personnel Distribution Branch, Office of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, and attend ed the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. From 1951-52 he commanded the carrier WASP, then was commanding officer of the Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, and Commander Naval Air Bases, Sixth Naval District. His last post before retirement in 1956 was Vice Deputy Commandant, Education Division, Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He then became executive director of the Jacksonville Area of the Chamber of Commerce.
Capt. McCaffree was awarded the Air Medal for services in the Panama Canal Zone in December 1941; the American Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal.
Survivors include his widow, Margaret S. of 4345 Landover Road, Jacksonville; a son, LCdr. Burnham C. McCaffree, Jr.; his mother, Mrs. Charles McCaffree of Seattle, Wash.; a brother, Charles McCaffree, Jr., of East Lansing, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. George Helliwell of Seattle; a stepson, James Averill, and two granddaughters.
