CDR - Commander (O-5) is the fifth highest commissioned officer rank in the US Navy. Commander Hughes was a decorated Naval Aviator who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), and Air Medal with eight gold stars, to wit, ninth award. A career naval officer, he was a veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

Obituary from the Shreveport Times newspaper, June 20, 2004, Sunday, p. 4-B:

SHREVEPORT, LA – Albert G. Hughes, Jr. of Shreveport, Louisiana came to eternal rest on June 18th of 2004. He was born on February 17, 1922, the son of Albert G. and Alberta Hughes of Shreveport. Mr. Hughes graduated from Byrd High School in 1939 and attended Centenary College prior to his commission as a Naval Officer and attending Navy flight school in Pensacola, Florida in 1942. Commander Albert G. Hughes, Jr. USN retired, was a career Navy pilot of 27 years. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and nine Air Medals in the South Pacific during WWII.

Mr. Hughes is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Margaret “Peg” Hughes, and their children, Karen Hughes Murphy, husband Alan, and their children Justin and Shannon Harter and Brooks Murphy of Shreveport; Kevin Hughes, wife Linda, and their children Anna and Kyle of Dallas, TX; and Kelly Hughes, wife Leisa and their children Sarah, Lauren and Jonathan of Houston, TX; his brother Charles Hughes, and preceded in death by his sister Doris Hughes Moseley and brothers David L. Hughes and John A. Hughes.

Honorary pallbearers are George Head, Buddy Johnson, Murff O’Neal, Edwin Noland, David Oliver, Capt. Arthur Batson USN retired and the men of Manresa.

Mr. Hughes was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church for 34 years. He loved fishing, spending time with his grandchildren and going to Manresa for retreats where he felt very close to God. There is great sense of loss in our hearts, but we know he is now resting in the presence of the Lord; and we, his family and friends are grateful for having known him and loved him.

Thanks to Dr. Anil Nanda and his neurosurgery staff at LSU HC, Dr. Phil Wang, the Dubuis Hospital and The Grace Home for the excellent care.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. Officiating will be Rev. Peter Mangum. A family visitation is following in the Family Life Center at the church.

Memorials may be made to the LSU Health Sciences Neurosurgery Center or St. Joseph Catholic Church.
