RALEIGH - Mark Stephen Gilley, 61, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2008, in Raleigh, after a battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Born on Dec. 1, 1946 in Leaksville, Rockingham County, North Carolina, he was the son of Ruby Earles Gilley (now of Murrells Inlet, SC) and the late M. Durwood Gilley. He was a 1965 graduate of J. M. Morehead High School. He entered the United States Navy in March of 1966 and was assigned as a Communications Technician II to the Pentagon, where he met his wife, Nancy Graus Gilley.

Following his service, he graduated from Rockingham Community College in 1972 with highest honors then earned his Bachelor of Science, Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1974, graduating with honors.

On Feb. 14, 1976, he married Nancy and shortly thereafter they took up residence in Raleigh. Mark was employed by Square D Company in Knightdale for the last 26 years, where he has made many long-time friends. His many interests and accomplishments included playing drums for the high school band; playing guitar for a garage combo, The Ventures; becoming a private pilot; earning an advanced ham radio operator's license, electronics of every type, gardening, home improvement, the NC State Fair, and grilling steaks on "Red Meat Saturday Night."

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his sister, Lisa Gilley Vernon and her husband, Wade Vernon, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and their sons, Jay Shockley and Robbie Vernon; and a large extended family.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at Cremation Society of the Carolinas, 2205 East Millbrook Road, Raleigh, N.C. A visitation with the family will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the ALS Association, Jim "Catfish" Hunter Chapter, 120 Penmarc Drive, Raleigh, 27603.
