John Benjamin George of Prince Frederick, MD died January 3, 2009.
He was born September 25, 1918 in Ravanna, Missouri, the son of John Benjamin Raymond and Ora Bowers George.
He received a bachelors degree, Suma Cum Laude, from Princeton University. He also studied at Oxford University in 1949 and 1954 in studies related to residence and study in East Africa. He rose in grade from private to Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army during WWII,. serving as infantry unit commander in Guadalcanal and the North Burma campaigns. He had a varied international career as an Africanist, association executive, conservationist and writer, as well as working in civil service with the Departments of State and Interior.
Mr. George is survived by his wife Dorothea Anne Szameitat George, whom he married in 1965.

He is the author of the military classic "Shots Fired In Anger" about his experience as a rifleman in the early Guadalcanal campaign. He had already been a crack shot while in the 132nd Infantry in the Illinois National Guard when his unit was induced into the Army just months before Pearl Harbor. He and his regiment landed on Guadalcanal just one day after invasion and he immediately saw combat on the beach head and Lunga point. His famous memoir not only details the conflicts he witnessed and took part in, but also gives detail information about tactics employed and indepth descriptions of weapons employed as well as those of hier enemies.
