Appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, from the State of Missouri; entered the Military Academy as a cadet on July 1st, 1869; graduated 33rd in his class from the Military Academy on June 17th, 1874, and was appointed as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry with the 9th United States Infantry Regiment. Serving on frontier duty at Ft. Laramie, Wyoming, from September 29th, 1874, to June 13th, 1875; at Ft. Hays, Kansas, from June 13th to August 3rd, 1875; transferred to the 6th Cavalry Regiment on May 25th, 1875; at Camp, McDowell, Arizona, from October 20th, 1875, to July 14th, 1876; at Ft.
