Don Caldwell Is Claimed
Dies at Tampa, Fla., Base on Thursday
Don L. Caldwell, 67, a retired U. S. Army Colonel and commander of Greenfield's Company G in World War I, died Thursday in the station hospital at McDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Fla., following a long illness.
Military rites were held Saturday at McDill. Interment was in Arlington National Cemetery at Washington, D. C.
He is survived by his widow, Lillian, of Tampa.
A native of the Greenfield community, Col. Caldwell first entered military service as an enlisted man in the Ohio National Guard in Greenfield in 1916.
He was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1916, and served on the Mexican Border.
Promoted to captain in 1917, he conducted the mustering-in of Co. G and led the outfit through its training in this country and with the AEF in France in WWI.
He later served with the Army of Occupation in Germany.
He suffered disability by gas in the war.
After the war he spent some time in Greenfield and again headed the Greenfield ONG.
He later went to New York City and was engaged for a number of years in the heating business.
He re-entered the Army shortly after Pearl Harbor - Dec. 7, 1941 - and during World War II commanded the MP Command at Camp Campbell, Ky., served as liaison officer with the Fifth Service Command, and as an instructor for the ONG.
He applied for assignment with occupation forces in Europe, but after a period of hospitalization was sent to Manila, P. I. in February 1945.
After a tour of duty as Chief, Criminal Investigation Division of Headquarters, Philippines Command, he returned to this country late in 1948, and was assigned to special duty at Camp Kilmer, N. J.
Subsequently, he was placed on the retired list and named director of Civil Defense at Cincinnati where he resided for a number of years before moving to Tampa.
Caldwell was the first state commander of the Ohio Rainbow Veterans and was a charter member of the Co. G chapter and attended its annual reunions until recent years.

Funeral services for Col. Don Layman Caldwell, 66, of 101 Beach Pl., who passed away in a Tampa hospital Thursday morning, will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Chapel No. 1 MacDill Field, with Chaplain MacDonald H. Westlake officiating, after which the remains will be taken to Washington D. C., where interment will be held Monday afternoon in Arlington National Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lillian W. Caldwell, Tampa, and one son, David L. Caldwell, East Meadow, N.Y.
