Ruth Moody

Ruth Evelyn Moody, 87, a gracious teacher and friend to all who knew and loved her, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, at the Saxton Woods Nursing Home in St. Joseph, Mo.

She was born Jan. 1, 1918, in St. Francis, Kan., to the late Pearle L. and Grace M. (Harrison) Johnson. Upon graduating from Ottawa High School in 1936, she studied at Ottawa University to receive her teaching certification. While there, she met Lloyd LaVerle Moody. They married Feb. 26, 1938, and had four children.

In 1950, she was contracted by the school district in Oberlin, Kan., where she taught first grade until 1959. After attending Ottawa University, she finished her four year degree at Colorado State University. She graduated along with her eldest daughter, Grace, in 1961.

In 1959, her husband received an Assistant Professor of Industrial Arts position at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. While there, she taught first and second grades until 1979. In 1975, she was named "Teacher of the Year."

Both she and her husband lived in Fort Collins for 20 years before moving to Nevada, Mo. They lived in Nevada until 1999 when they moved to The Fountains in St. Joseph to be closer to family.

Ruth enjoyed sewing, her rose garden, and taking care of her pets. She was a long-time member of the church, Lions Club, and the Retired Teachers Association. She also spent many hours raising funds for the American Heart Association.

She will be greatly missed by her husband and four children who survive her.

A joint memorial service with her beloved husband, Lloyd, of 67 years will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2101 Jules Street in St. Joseph. The Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Hands of Hope Hospice or the American Heart Association. Services under the direction of Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory in St. Joseph.
