DILLEY – Martin E. Gerdes, 80, died early Saturday at Veterans Hospital in Portland. His death was attributed to acute leukemia. Funeral services were held at Fuiten Mortuary Chapel in Forest Grove today with is pastor, the Rev. Albert Carow of the Mr. Olive Lutheran Church of Forest Grove, officiating. Mrs. Gilbert Groneman was soloist with Mr. Clara Bunker, organist. Concluding rites and vault interment were at the family plot at Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Mr. Gerdes was born at Mt. Olive, Ill., on Sept. 25, 1890, the son of Henry and Anna Schultz Gerdes. He spent all of his early life there and worked as an inspector for the railroads. He came west, then enlisted in the Navy during World War I while at Klickitat, Wash. After his Navy service he worked for the Standard Oil company at Point Richmond, Cal., until coming to this area in 1927. Mr. Gerdes farmed at Scoggins Junction from 1927 until moving to his present farm home near Dilley in 1939.

He was married to Lena Dethlefs, in Portland, Jan. 25, 1925, who survives at the family home; also surviving are three children; Mrs. Ron (Helen) Creel of Gales Creek, Monroe of Forest Grove and Luther of Gaston; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Martha Koenig and Mary Hunsinger, both of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Anna Whitehouse of Mt. Olive, Ill., and a brother Louis of Grand Island, Neb.

Mr. Gerdes was a long-time member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Forest Grove.
