HAZLEY PITTMAN KILLED BY TREE

CWA Worker Meets Instant Death in Globe Swamp Section.

Hazley Pittman, 37, son of Mr. Sampson Pittman of the Globe Swamp Section was instantly killed Tuesday afternoon when a tree cut by CWA workers fell on him. Pittman had been employed for a short time as a CWA worker under the direction of Mr. Buck Tyler, foreman.

Deceased was cutting on a tree just beyond the one that fell on him. Workers near the tree told him to get out of the way, but as he was partly deaf he did not hear them. Falling on him was a large oak about 18 inches through. The tree struck his head and crushed it in. It took some 24 men to prize the tree offf him. He was dead before the tree was lifted.

A member of Beulah Baptist Church, he lived according to people in the community a true Christian life and was held in high esteen. They say he will be greatly missed in the church and community. He was regarded as a truthful, honest and upright citizen.

He lived with his father in the Globe Swamp section. One brother Mr. J. W. of Fairmont, also did.

Funeral Services were conducted at the Stone Cemetery near his home by Rev. R. N. Cashwell of Lumberton.

Son of Abbie Stone and Sampson Pittman. Sampson was the son of Martha Huggins and Sampson Pittman. Sampson was the son of Sion Pittman and Elizabeth "Betsy" Glare. Betsy was the daughter of Stephen and Mary Glare.
