GARLAND – Funeral services for Gale Augustus Fields of Garland were Monday, June 20, 2005, at Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Garland. Burial followed at Restland Cemetery in Dallas under the direction of Wilson Mortuary.

Mr. Fields died Wednesday, June 15, 2005. He was born April 23, 1929, to Will Fields and Clydie Rambo Fields. He grew up in Marshall and attended Marshall public schools. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during the Korean War before earning a bachelor of science degree from Wiley College. Mr. Fields served 31 years as recreation supervisor at Lou Huff Recreation Center. In 1984, Mr. Fields came up with the idea for a Garland Sports Hall of Fame, and each year, two Garland school district seniors receive awards based on character, leadership and athletic ability. A past member of the board of governors, he was inducted into the Garland Sports Hall of Fame in September 2001. In October 2001, the Gale A. Fields Center opened in Garland.

Mr. Fields is survived by his wife, Georgia A. Fields; six children, Jerome Fields, Tony Hicks Sr., Perry Hicks, Gail Fields Harris, Dale Fields and Diane Fields Redish; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Fields Calvin of Milwaukee, Wis.; other relatives and friends, including a cousin, Vernella Taylor of Marshall.
