Alf in his early years was a revenue scout for the government. In the late 1800's he became famous for his competitive "long distance walking" and was given the nickname 'the mountain wonder'.

Alf married Cordelia Belle "Delia" Prater , his cousin on 9 March 1890 in Calhoun, Gordon, GA. (Gordon County Marriage Book, 1881 - 1892, pg 462). They had eight children, only four which lived to adulthood.

He was killed one evening by a train while walking home.

The above dates are correct according to family documents. Incorrect middle initial and dates were given to the stone mason or he just misread the Alf's middle initial and the "7" as a "9".
