He was a 1940 graduate of Johnsonburg High School and a 1947 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Wharton Business School. He enlisted in the US ARMY in 1942, served as a radio operator during WW II, and was honorably discharged in 1945.
He was a member of the New York-Pennsylvania Association of Accountants, Masonic Lodge, and Lions Club. He volunteered at the Bradford Regional Medical Center, the American Cancer Society and the Friendship Table.
On July 27, 1947 in Johnsonburg he married Edith Dorothy (Zurfluh) Black who died March 24, 1984, then on December 30, 1986 he married Cathryn (Francis) Matthews-Black who survives. He had been employed at Dresser Industries as director of the accounting department retiring in 1984.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons: Douglas L. Black, and David J Black, three stepdaughters: Julia Matthews Krieg, Marcia Matthews Grove, and Gayle Matthews Kochan, and a step son: James Matthews, one brother: Wayne Black and one grandson, Eric Black.
Burial in McKean Memorial Park.
