Richard "Chito" Vega Lopez, 73, of Flagstaff, died Monday, March 1, 2010, peacefully surrounded by his family after dealing with a long illness.

Mr. Lopez was born Nov. 4, 1936, in Flagstaff to Cresencio R. and Sarah Lopez. He attended St. Anthony School and Flagstaff High School. Later, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was a very proud Marine. He was always reminiscing and remembering such an important time in his life and stayed on as a lifetime member of the San Francisco Peaks Marine Corps League. After serving his country, Mr. Lopez worked various jobs starting with Southwest Forest Industries, Kaibab Industries, U.S. National Forest Service, Navajo Army Depot and the city of Flagstaff, where he later retired because of a severe injury.

He met the love of his life, Henrietta "Rickey" Lopez, whom he was married to for 43 years. They met while he was playing basketball for the Williams City League. He might be best remembered for his years of coaching women's softball, primarily the Pine Knots and Magana's Painting, a team which he and his wife, Rickey, began and went on to win many city and state titles.

Prior to his coaching, Mr. Lopez played fast-pitch softball as a pitcher and basketball with the Rogue Angels and Canyon Club. He enjoyed being around his family and friends for functions such as baptisms, weddings and, most of all, barbecues. He enjoyed traveling, camping and loved dancing and listening to Mexican music. In his later years, he enjoyed watching professional sports.

Mr. Lopez is survived by his wife, Henrietta "Ricky" Magana Lopez; son Julian Lopez of Mesa; sisters Mary Nunez of Flagstaff and Emily Tellez (Martin) of Tempe; and brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Richard "Lopes" Lopez; parents Cresencio R. Lopez and Sarah Vega Lopez; brother David V. Lopez; and brother-in-law Joe Nunez.

Holy Rosary will be Friday at 7 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m., also at the church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery with military honors.

Condolences can be sent to his family at www.norvelowensmortuary.com .
