Bertha W. Jarmer. 101, died August 16, 2009, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, Larned.
She was born March 5, 1908, in Hudson. The daughter of Otto and Josephine Mueller Werner, the sixth of nine children. When she was one year old the family moved to a farm west of Zenda. After graduating from Zenda High School in 1926, Bertha entered the Great Bend School of Nursing where she obtained her degree as a registered nurse. In 1938 she married Joe Jarmer in Kingman, and they moved to Zenda to live. Joe died September 3, 1987. Bertha was the oldest member of St. John's Catholic Church and also Zenda's oldest citizen at the time of her death. She was also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, St. Elizabeth's Altar Society, Zenda, and a charter member of the St. Leo Daughters of Isabella. In addition to nursing, often private duty, she was Zenda's assistant postmistress for many years, Zenda city treasurer form 1966 to 1999, acted in many locally produced plays, established a TOPS chapter in Zenda, and was an avid quilter. There being no doctor in town, Bertha graciously helped all who came to her door in need of medical assistance, her professional nursing experience serving the community well.

Survivors include three daughters, Virginia and husband Jack Steele, Wichita, Lu Ann Pankratz, Larned, Josephine Zane, Tucson, AZ; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Fredrick and Clem Werner, five sisters, Eleanora Zoeller, Leona Harbert, Oliva, Josephine, and Sr. Kathleen (Madeline) Werner, and one son-in-law, Gaylon Pankratz.

Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 21st , at Livingston Funeral Home, Kingman. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 22nd at St. John's Catholic Church, Zenda, with Father John Miller presiding. Visitation will be from Noon until 8:00 p.m. Thursday and from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday at Livingston Funeral Home, Kingman. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Church Cemetery, Zenda.
