Her parents were both German and settled near Albany, New York, but moved, when she had grown to womanhood, to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where both died at a ripe old age.
She was married in 1854 to Daniel A. Wickes, also of New York, and to them three children were born—Charles A., who lived in this city many years, but now resides in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Emma, who died before her second birthday, and Milo J., who resides in San Antonio, Texas. Her grandson, Elbert Wickes, and granddaughter, Miss Margaret Wickes are both well known in this city.
She died at the home of her son Charles in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on Wednesday, January 25, 1911, of paralysis, in her 79th year, after a complicated illness lasting eight months.
After the funeral service at the residence, she was brought by her son to Lamoni and interred in Rose Hill cemetery on last Friday, Elder Henry Stebbins presiding at a short service at the grave, assisted by an octet of singers who kindly rendered this friendly service to the bereaved son and granddaughter in their last ministry to the departed mother.
The husband of her youth died in Dover, Oklahoma, in February 1895.
She was a woman of large mental powers and artistic talents. She was of a religious nature and for many years had been identified with the Presbyterian faith, and was ready and waiting for the great change.
