On Monday morning shortly before 7 o'clock, at the home of Mr. Bernhard Bunge near Steinthal, where he had been staying, Mr. Wm. Baltz, attempted suicide in that he shot a rifle bullet into his head. The reason for this terrible event is unknown but his will to live can be traced to great depression during the last few days. He got up as usual and had breakfast and ordered lunch (he was working as a cabinet maker at the Bethlehem Church and did not return to the house for lunch), and then went to the room of his sick sister. He told her about his sadness and said he was going to shoot himself, and should he also take her life to put an end to her suffering. Thereafter he went to the summer kitchen and took the rifle off the wall. Mr. and Mrs. Bunge who were eating breakfast, and observed this and asked him if he was going hunting instead of going to work and for what was he going hunting. He closed the door to the summer kitchen and shortly thereafter the crack of a gun shot. They sprang to the summer kitchen and found his dead body with a bullet hole in his forehead.
Wm. Baltz was born on February 12, 1881 in New Holstein and was 33 years old. In his last years he worked as a cabinet maker. He is survived by his mother, three step-sister, three sisters and one stepbrother. The burial will take place today at the Rockville cemetery with Pastor Hauser officiating.
