He graduated from Rutgers University in 1860, and was attending the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons when the Civil war started. He served at the United States Army General Hospital as a Army Medical Cadet from 1862 to 1863. He graduated with a medical degree, and would go on to be one of the foremost diagnosticians in the country. He was a pioneer in the study and teaching of pathology, and was a specialist in nervous diseases.
He married Frances Strong Rogers in 1870. They had four children:
1). Doctor Theodore Caldwell Janeway (November 2, 1872-December 27, 1872)
2). Matilda S. Janeway (November 11, 1875 - ). Married William T. Wisner on December 14, 1901.
3). Frances Rogers Janeway (January 11, 1882 - ). Married John David Lannon on October 10, 1908.
4). Grace Rogers Janeway (May 3, 1883 - October 16, 1883)
