John married Barbara Boyer in 1829. Her father was William and mother Katherine. They are of German and Dutch descent. There is no American Indian or French in the line that researchers have found.
John was shot in ambush on 21 Jul 1863 by Wilson Punty (although some say it was William), a Southern sympathizer and died a few hours later after giving a deposition on the matter. No one was prosecuted for the murder. John and his family were abolitionists and he was a conductor on the underground railroad. This information was added by D Ryan a descendant of John and Barbara Wass.
