The sudden death of Miss Ellen S Andrews on the morning of April 3rd, after a week's illness, came as a great shock to her many friends. Miss Andrews had not been in robust health for many years, but had kept quite well during the winter and was looking forward to going out more when the sunny spring days came.

Her early years were spent in New Salem, where she was born Nov 16, 1834, the daughter of Col. Wilson and Somanthy Hastings Andrews. She was a descendant of Elder William Brewster in the eighth generation, through his son Jonathan.

She was educated at New Salem academy and was a successful teacher in the public schools for a number of years. She also gave much attention to music, both vocal and instrumental. She had a sweet voice and was for sometime a soprano singer in the choir of the Congregational church.

About 40 years ago she, with her parents removed to Athol, which had since been her home.

Though her life was a quite one, she was of a social nature and had many friends among the young, as well as those of many mature years, whom she cherished with strong affection. the influence of her Christian life was felt by those whom she associated. Her gentle presence will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She leaves two sisters, Mrs Oliver Sherwin Lovejoy of Haverhill and Mrs Henry Martyn Smith of Enfield. Miss Andrews was a member of the Athol Congregational church. The funeral was held in Athol, April 5th, Rev Charles O Eames officiating. The burial was in New Salem Center.
