Frances Helen Oaks of Hot Springs passed away Saturday, February 27, 2010, at Castle Manor Nursing Home in Hot Springs. She was 101 years old.
Frances was born on November 4, 1908, in Sioux County, Iowa, to Chris and Anna (Hazlitt) Koltze. She lived near Fairview, S.D., until she was six years old. She attended Oakland school for one year.
Then her family moved north of Canton, S.D., where she attended Dayton country school through the eighth grade. Later her family moved to a farm west of Canton. She graduated from Canton High School in 1927.
She attended two years of normal school at Sioux Falls College and taught school near Sisseton, S.D.
She married Harold Carl Oaks on April 13, 1936. They lived in Elkton, Hartford, and Humboldt, S.D, and then moved to Canton in 1950.
They had one daughter, Cathryn Anne. In 2003 Frances moved from the Good Samaritan Retirement Center in Canton to Hot Springs to be near her daughter, Cathy, and son-in-law, Morris Nelson.

Frances worked in the laundry and kitchen at Canton-Inwood Hospital for 14 years before retiring. She loved gardening, reading and listening to music, especially Christian radio. She was a member of Canton United Methodist Church, where she was active member of UMW for many years. She was also an R.S.V.P. volunteer. She loved to make cards and send them to others and enjoyed giving birthday parties for her family.
In later years when she had macular degeneration, she still continued to read her Upper Room devotions and her Bible every day and kept a positive attitude about life no matter what her circumstances were.
She was a wonderful example of love, kindness and inner strength.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, her parents, her sister, Olive, and one grandson, Jason.
Happy to have shared her life are her daughter, Cathy, and husband Morris Nelson of Hot Springs, S.D., her grandson, Ken Nelson of Peoria, Ill., and many relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Hot Springs.

Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 5, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Canton wit Rev. Ron Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at the Forest Hill Cemetery.
