V.B. "Len" was born at Allendale, Missouri. He wasn't yet two years old when he began the trip to Oregon on the Oregon Trail with his parents, Otis C. and Rachel (Hiles) Eakin and other family. At 22 years old he married Fay V. Blaylock on November 12, 1901 at Moro, Oregon, and began a home on his property at Rutledge, Oregon.

Publication: The Pacific Homestead, Salem, Oregon, dated Thursday , October 13, 1904 reads:
Mr. V.B. Eakin- By careful management he has accumulated considerable property and this year harvested 300 acres of good wheat, 70 acres of barley and 50 acres of oats from his 800 acre ranch. Mr. Eakin knows of no place can a man do better than in Sherman County.

He added to his acres as he added to his family. Len and Fay's first child, a son was born in 1903. They had eight sons before a daughter was born to them in 1922.

To quote Bertha Belshe from her published book, "They Paved the Way": "The Eakin Family dominated this community. (Rutledge) They were a large family and interested in the best education they could get for their children. Teachers were expected to meet this standard." For years V.B. was active in the affairs of the Rutledge School. School Clerk Report for 1942 lists board members that included three Eakin men; V.B. Eakin, L.D.Eakin and Harold D. Eakin. O.C. Eakin also served on school boards and as a chairman. Ralph Eakin was on the ESD Board for 31 years.

V.B. Eakin was progressive and successful for a man who's own formal school education was limited. In 1931 he built and patented a Draft Equalizer. This piece of equipment enabled use and efficiency of multiple plows. As grain harvest advanced to handling grain in bulk V.B. and Sons built the Eakin Elevator in 1942 on a railroad siding near Highway 97 south of Grass Valley, Oregon.

He had 28 Grandchildren and 2 Great Grandchildren.
