George M. Davis Near 90th Milestone Answers Final Call

Retired Farmer Had Made His Home With Children Since Death of His Wife. Funeral Services Today Burial at Arthur

George M. Davis, an aged retired farmer, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alice Fuson, in this city, Tuesday night. The infirmities of old age had for some time enfeebled Mr. Davis and the end was not unexpected.
He was born in Salem, Indiana, May 19, 1837. After obtaining manhood he was united in marriage with Nancy J. Smith. The couple farmed in Indiana for a number of years, then moved to Christian county, Illinois and later spent 8-years in Kansas, before coming to Moultrie county. He farmed near Caldwelll in Jonathan for some years and in 1909, after the death of his wife, which occurred on Feb. 14th of that year, he moved to Sullivan and has been making his home with his children.
He is survived by six sons and two daughters as follows: Ethel W. Davis of Sullivan; E. Arvel and C. Elva Davis of California, William M. Davis of Sullivan, John A. Davis of Kirksville and A. F. Davis of Arthur; Mrs. Alice Fuson of Sullivan and Mrs. Lora E. Thomas of Straughm, Indiana. There are 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Davis was one of the staunch old Jacksonian democrats of this country.
Funeral services will be held from the Fuson home this (Friday) afternoon at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. W.B. Hopper. Interment will be in the Arthur cemetery. His six sons will carry the remains to their last resting place.
The two sons in California arrived here Thursday. They were notified Monday that their father's end was near and at once started on their trip.

George McElroy Davis married Nancy Jane Smith, March 5, 1861. George and Nancy lived in Washington County, Indiana for the first 20 years of their marriage. Nine of their eleven children were born there. Then they moved to Illinois where George and his sons became grain merchants. Later, two sons, "C.A," and "C.E.", went to California and became wealthy in real estate transactions. George and Nancy were the parents of the following children: 1) Ella Leora b. March 22, 1862 d. Nov. 21, 1948 in Straughn, Indiana m. Perry Fuson; and later Sylvester Thomas; 2) Ethelbert Wilkenson b. Dec. 6, 1863 d. Nov. 19, 1948 in Sullivan Indiana m. Emma Williams; 3) Violet Alice b. Dec. 30, 1865 d. feb. 1, 1938 m. Frank Fuson; 4) Cyrus Arvelle "C.A." b. March 9, 1868 d. Nov. 4, 1951 in long Beach Calif. M. Ella Watkins; 5) Sarepta Naomi b. Oct. 16, 1870 d. Sept. 10, 1876 in Indiana; 6) Clarence Elva "C.E." b. Oct. 29, 1875 d. June 1971 m. Lillis Daughtery, Allie McCullough, Vee (surname unknown), and Hilda Horton; 7) William McElroy b. Sept. 5, 1877 d. Oct.13, 1956 m. Ebbie Bolton, divorced; 8) Zella Pearl b. April 18, 1880 a twin, d. Aug. 13, 1881; 9) John Arthur b. April 18,1880 a twin d. Nov. 13, 1964 m. Nellie Bell; 10) Elsie Gertrude b. july 30, 1881, a twin d. August 21, 1881; 11) Alonzo Franklin Davis b. July 30, 1881 a twin d. Dec. 14, 1964 m. Frances Blackwell Warren.
