Russell was a "prominent physician" and was "engaged in hospital work and had been ill several months" prior to his death. His body was returned from White Hall (the news article indicates this location, but he died in Sangamon Township according to his Illinois death certificate), Illinois to Burlington for burial.

Survived by his mother, Dr. Jarman's funeral was held from her home, 616 South Broad Street, Sanford, North Carolina.

He was also survived by his wife, Mrs. Louise Jarman; two sons, Jimmie and Russell, Jr.; Mrs. A. H. Jarman of Burlington and two sisters, Mrs. Jennings M. Bryan, Burlington and Mrs. Jake Mayo, Freemont.
