Viola Constance Gran was born in Freeman, South Dakota, on January 23, 1914, to Hans and Nellie (Nelson) Gran. She was baptized on March 17, 1914, at the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Freeman.

On July 16, 1944, Viola was married to Arnold Burau in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Vi was co-owner in business with her husband for many years. After selling the business, Vi worked at Jarvis' Fairway for several years. After her husband had several strokes, Vi stayed at home to care for him.
