Glykeria Vafakos was born September 7, 1897 as the first child of Dimitrios Panaghiotis Vafakos and Meryanthy nee Bakopoulos in Filiatra, Prefecture Messenia, Greece. In 1912 she and her Mom and sister, Dionysia, emigrated to America on the ss Macedonia arriving in May 1912 in NYC. They went to Chicago to be with their Dad who had preceded them to America on the ss Rotterdam in 1900. Glykeria met and married Panaghiotis Konstantinos Thanasoulas in 1916 in Chicago, IL. They had four children.
