J. Preston Griggs, 61, Educator, Dies Here
James Preston Griggs, 61, resident of the Idaho Falls area for the past 30 years and well know educator, died Friday morning in an Idaho Falls hospital following major surgery.
He was born June 14, 1903 at Alta, Wyo., to James F. and Maud Pratt Griggs. He was raised in the Teton Basin and graduated form the Teton High School were he was active in athletics, having received an all-state basketball award.
He attended Brigham Young University and the University of Utah where he graduated in 1929.
Mt. Griggs' teaching career began in Victor. He taught in Teton County several years and then moved to Coltman in 1935, where he was principal. He was athletic coach at Ammon High School from 1943 to 1945 and then taught in Rigby High School until 1958, at which time he became principal at the West Jefferson High School at Terreton, and was serving in this capacity at the time of his death.
For several years he was a member of the executive committee of the Jefferson County Teacher's Assn. of the Sixth District, for whom he later served as president. He was also the coordinator for the Sixth District Athletic Assn. for three years.
At the time of his death he was a high priest in the Idaho Falls LDS State and previously seved in the MIA. Stake Sunday School, as president of the Elders Quorum and was especially active in various musical groups as director. He was ward chorister in the 24th LDS Ward.
On Aug. 24, 1934 he was marred to LaVern Andrews in the Salt Lake Temple. He is survived my his widow and five daughters and four sons: Mrs. Max (Maxine) Brinton: Jay Preston: Burton A.: and Mrs. Larry (Carol) Davies, all of Idaho Falls; Master Sgt. Alan A. stationed at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana: Mrs. R. J. (Jeanette) Davies, Napa, Calif.: Mrs. Varr (Bernice) Nelson, Salt Lake City, Utah: and Vaughn Pratt and Mary Lou, students at BYU in Provo, Utah. Survivors also include 28 grandchildren.
He is also survived by two brothers and three sister, T. C. Griggs and Larson Griggs, Klamath Falls, Ore.; Wanda Van Wagenen, Ogden, Utah; Lucille Henry, and Eudora Wilkins, both of Seattle, Wash.
Funeral services will be Monday at the Idaho Falls 24th LDS Ward Chapel, 1155 1st St. at 1 p.m. Bishop David E. Benton will officiate.
The family will meet friends and relatives form 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday at the Wood's Chapel of the Pines, also Monday from 11 a.m. until time of services.
Interment will be in Fielding Memorial Park under the direction of the Wood Funeral Home.
