Mrs. Edna I. Maxwell died in Thomas Nursing Center about 7 a.m. Tuesday, October 5, less than three weeks before her 100th birthday, which she would have celebrated on October 23. She had lived in Collingsworth County 73 years, most of the time in the Salt Fork community.
The former Edna Ira Berry, she was born October 23, 1882 near Breckenridge, Stephens County. She was the daughter of William T. Berry and Sallie E. Berry. She was still a girl when the family moved to Sulphur, Indian Territory, where she married S.L. Maxwell March 18, 1900.
Later they lived in Harmon County before coming to Collingsworth County in 1909. The family lived in the Rolla community and at Wellington about three years before they moved to the Salt Fork community. This was to be her home until the 1960s when she moved into Wellington.
She was a member of Lillie Baptist Church for many years until the congregation disbanded. Her husband was a deacon.
Mrs. Maxwell was the last surviving member of her family. Two of her brothers had also made their home here. Tom Berry, a farmer at Rolla and Wellington and Champ Berry, who was the architect for the Collingsworth County Court House.
Her survivors are two sons, Ernest Maxwell and Ray Maxwell who live at Amarillo; three daughters, Mrs. Bessie Cook of Lufkin, Mrs. Tula Bolton of Mangum, OK and Mrs. Sudie Wright of Amarillo.
There are 34 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Sheriff Kenneth Maxwell is a grandson.
Mr. Maxwell died in 1938 and she was preceded in death by two sons, Henry Maxwell and John Maxwell.
