Gail was born on Feb. 6, 1941, in Cody, Wyo., a son of George and Barbara Wilson Downing. He was raised in Cody, attending West Side Grade School and graduating from Cody High School.
On June 2, 1962, he married Donna Kay Bronnenberg in Cody. Gail worked most of his life as a grocer, a career that he truly loved and enjoyed. Gail and Donna moved to Red Lodge in 1978 when they purchased Marchello IGA. They operated Downing IGA until retiring in 1996. Gail later worked part-time at Rock Creek Home & Garden.
Gail enjoyed fishing, traveling in their motor home and riding his ATV. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge #818 of Cody.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, James and William Downing and one sister, Baby Downing.
Survivors include his wife, Donna K. Downing of Red Lodge; two sons, David (Shannon) Downing of Red Lodge and Clay (Barbara) Downing of Bearcreek; five grandchildren, Casey, Derrick and Dusty Downing, and Cody and Brittany Mann; one brother, Jack Downing of Cody; three nephews, Stephen, Curtis and Doug (Annette)Downing; and one niece, Joan (Tom) Dempster.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 2, at Smith-Olcott Funeral Chapel in Red Lodge, followed by a luncheon at the Beartooth Elks Lodge. Cremation has taken place and interment will be at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery at Cody.
Memorials are preferred, and may be given to Beartooth Hospice, PO Box 590, Red Lodge, MT 59068.
