In 1857, the family moved to Hartland township of Freeborn County, Minnesota and were amongst the earliest settlers of that township. Roy grew to adulthood in the Hartland area. Roy McColley and Ida May Wilcox were married October 28, 1878. She was born February 8, 1864 at Brush Creek, Minn. Roy and Ida spent the early years of their married life in the Freeborn and Blue Earth County area. In the fall of 1891, they bought a 120 acre farm in section 36 of Alden township, Freeborn County (NE quarter of SW quarter and W half of SE quarter). This would be their home for the remainder of their lives. Roy and Ida were the parents of two children, Emery and Ora. (They also had an adopted son, William Wilcox). After their son Emery married, the two families made their home together on the farm. Ida died April 30, 1932 at their farm home. Roy died October 11, 1940 at the Albert Lea Hospital. They are buried in the cemetery at Alden."
