David was the third son of Isom Denton and Elizabeth Lincoln, who were married July 17, 1826 in Harrison County, Indiana. His siblings included:
Barbara (1827-1907)
Nancy (1827-1922)
Joseph (1830-?)
John (1837-?)
James (1842-?)
Wilford (1842-1888)
Washington (1843-?)
Thomas J. (1843-1864)
Hannah D. (1848-1830) (married Thomas Stalcup)
William (1850-1907)

David's younger brother Thomas married Mahala Floyd on January 28, 1864. In September, David and Thomas traveled to Jeffersonville, where they enlisted in the Union. David was mustered out as part of the 59th Indiana, Co. B, on Sep. 22, and Thomas was placed in Co. E of the 9th Regiment on the following day.

Thomas was discharged on November 24, 1864, in Nashville; unfortunately he caught typhoid fever and died shortly afterward. His daughter Lizzie was born on January 12, 1865. David was discharged for furlough on April 29 or May 5 of 1865 in Indianapolis. When his regiment was mustered out again on May 8, 1865, they found that he had fled.

David married Thomas' widow Mahala on November 1, 1866 in Harrison County, Indiana. Together they raised Lizzie, but never had any children of their own.

On January 25, 1875, David purchased thirty acres of land from Joel Downs, for $250, in Lizzie's name. The agreement states:
This ensures(?) Witnesseth that if David F Denton will pay to Fanney E Denton Minor Heir of Thomas J Denton deceased the sum of three Hundred dollars When the said
Fanney E Denton becomes of full Adge without father then the said Fanney E Will make the said David A Deed in fees simple and if the said three hundred dollars is not
paid at that time to the said Fanney E then this obligation is to be nul and void and the forgoing Deed to Vest the said Fanny E Denton with all the apurtenance there unto belonging and the said David F Denton is to have no pay for the improvement that he put on said land.

This contract, along with census records indicating that David and Mahala lived "next door" to Joel and Nancy, suggest that David may have built some kind of small homestead on the property and moved his family there to farm. On 21 or 28 June 1880, he applied for an invalid's pension; later records state that he had locomotive ataxia, a hereditary disease common in the family of President Lincoln.

Lizzie married Daniel Stonecipher in 1882. The marriage took place in David's home. Lizzie and Danny then moved onto the property David had bought for her. They built a house there and raised a family. Their first son was named Cort Franklin to honor David.

David's life after 1882 is difficult to pinpoint. We know he applied for a veteran's pension, which was received on May 3, 1898. On October 19, 1901, he applied for admission to the Indiana Soldiers Home, and listed himself as "was married, now single" and "no children." At this point he had no property and no pension, and was living on the Crawford County side of Milltown, too ill to work due to his ataxia. He may have been a boarder with the Charles Sieg family. His application was approved on November 6, 1901.

David moved into the soldiers' home on July 11, 1902, but shortly afterwards, the administrators found out that he had failed to renew his furlough, and was a deserter from the Union army. On December 17 of that year, he was kicked out of the home. After this, David disappears from records. His place of burial is unknown; it is likely an unmarked grave in Milltown Cemetery.
