The son of Henry & Susannah (Miller) Lyter, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Halifax Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

He stood 5' 6" tall and had black hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg February 15, 1865, mustered into federal service there February 21 as a private with Co. H, 192nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 24, 1865.

He married Margaret Straw or Stroh ca. 1867 and fathered Charles E. (b. 01/03/68, d. 09/15/70), Henry Benjamin (b. 08/01/71), Elizabeth E. (b. 03/12/74 - married Lawrence Daniel Banks), Mary R. (b. 01/07/80 - married Jonathan Elmer Bahner), and Margaret Ann (b. 09/20/87 - married a Byers). Cause of death is listed as a "cerebral hemorrhage." Courtesy Dennis Brandt
