Syvert Johnson Opperud came from Norderhov, Buskerud, Norway in 1846. He arrived in New York City August 29, 1846 aboard the ship Columbo. He first settled in the Luther Valley Settlement of Rock County, Wisconsin. Later he moved to Iowa County, Wisconsin and married Martea "Martha" Amundsdatter Engen Frostlie March 22, 1848. He later moved to Gunder, Clayton County Iowa where he lived out his life. He was a farmer. He was the son of John Svendsen Smedsbolle and Dorthe Eriksdatter Opperud.
