My great-grandfather, Jess Leon Williams, was born May 22, 1894 in a 2 room log cabin in what is now Lincoln County. The kitchen floor was a dirt floor. The living room floor had a wooden floor.
He grew up on a farm. They raised cotton, cattle, horses and hogs. He remembers hauling the cotton by team and wagon to Shawnee in Pottowatomie County to the cotton gin. He went to school at the Stricter school in Lincoln County. He went to school with several full blood Indians. Later in life, he had a very close Indian friend named Charlie Frenchman. He said close friends as a brother to brother.
In 1909, at the age of 15, his family moved to Okfuskee County. Again they farmed for a living. He attended Banner School at Okfuskee for 3 years.
He married in August of 1913. In 1915, they moved to Dewey. Granddad and his brother-in-law came to Dewey in a covered wagon. It took them 3 days to make the trip. His wife and baby daughter came on the train to Collinsville. There, Grandad and his brother-in-law picked them up and came to Dewey.
In 1916, he started to work in the oil fields. He worked in the oil fields for 48 years, until he retired in 1964.
In 1918, Grandad bought his first car. It was a 1917 Model T. He can't remember what price he paid for it. He later bought a new 1924 Model T for $350. He paid $50.00 down and paid $30.00 a month on it. It was the only new car he ever owned.
He and his wife raised 8 children. All of them are still living.
Grandad is 88 years old now. He is a very kind and loving grandfather.
