From the Fresno Bee, Weds., Apr. 9, 1952:

Herbert Levy, 67, Realtor, Planning Chairman, Dies

Herbert Levy, 67, the Fresno City Planning Board chairman, the 1949 county grand jury foreman and a lifelong Fresno resident, died of a heart attack today in his home at 666 Home Avenue. He had been in the realty business since 1912.

Levy had not been ill and had arisen this morning to prepare for work. He was found lying on his bedroom floor and was pronounced dead by a physician.

In 1912 he and a brother, Leon, opened the Levy Bros. real estate and insurance business. They later were joined by Benjamin and Sigmund, other brothers.

He left the firm in 1946 and with his son, Herbert, Jr., established the Herb Levy Jr. Company with offices at 1627 Fulton Street.

Levy was the oldest past master of the Fresno Masonic Lodge No. 247 and for 33 years was the lodge treasurer. He became a thirty-third degree Mason in 1923. He was a trustee of the Tehran Shrine Temple and the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Sciots and Shrine Band and the High Twelve Club.

He was a director and treasurer of Temple Beth Israel and a director of the Fresno County Red Cross Chapter. He also was a member of the Fresno Lodge No. 723, Independent Order of B’nai B’rith.

Levy was on a Fresno ration board during World War II and was a housing department chairman of the Fresno City and County and Red Cross disaster department.

He was the secretary-manager of the Mutual Building and Loan Association from 1920 to 1930 and served as the Fresno Realty Board president in 1922 and 1941.

Levy organized the Young Men’s Christian Association Mandolin Club in 1904 and was an organizer of the Fresno High School Orchestra in 1899 and its president. He was one of the first male members of the Fresno Musical Club.

In addition to his son and brothers, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Leon Boro of Fresno. There are three grandchildren, Herbert W. and Robert L. Boro and Martin L. Levy. His wife, Mrs. Madeline Schuman Levy, died in 1947.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 AM in the Scottish Rite Temple, with Masonic Lodge No. 247 and Rabbi David L. Greenberg of the Temple Beth Israel officiating. Private committal services in the Chapel of the Light will follow.
