Neil Truman Barnes, 64, retired from Ted's Sporting Goods and resident of Arthur Court, died Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Mr. Barnes was a native of Marshall County and a 1963 graduate of Marshall County High School. He served in the Army from 1964 to 1967. Prior to his employment at Ted's Sporting Goods, he worked for Porter-Walker Company for several years. An avid sports enthusiast, he loved coaching City League basketball, baseball, and soccer. He was a member of Graymere Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Coleman Barnes and Iva Lee Brown Barnes, and brothers, Thomas Brown Barnes and Lee Haynes Barnes.

He is survived by his wife, Karen McAlister Barnes of Columbia; son, Christopher Neil (Natasha) Barnes of Murfreesboro; granddaughters, Kristen Lynn Barnes and Lauren Ashley Barnes, both of Murfreesboro; brothers, Dorris Watkins "D.W." Barnes of Morro Bay, Calif., and Earnest Coleman (Peggy) Barnes of Murfreesboro; sisters-in-law, Glendol Andrews Barnes of Murfreesboro and Polly Cheatham Barnes of Lewisburg; brothers-in-law, Leonard Wayne (Pat) McAlister of Newark, Ohio, and Thomas Allen (Janet) McAlister of Huntsville, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home, Columbia, with Wendell Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Triune Cemetery in Williamson County. The family will visit with friends Thursday, Feb. 25, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
