Born 30 November 1841 in Stark County, Ohio, Marion was the sixth child of Samuel and Sally Engle Ake. He and his brother, Zedekiah, answered the call to serve the Union.

Private Ake's Civil War service was in Company B, 115 Ohio Volunteer Infantry (OVI).

He married Malinda Elizabeth Youtz on 30 October 1866 after his return from service in the Civil War.

Marion and Malinda became the parents of four children. Two, Charles E. and Martin Edward, lived to adulthood. Charles and his wife, Minnie, are buried near Marion and Malinda. Two children, Joshua (b. 20 Sept 1868) and Alvesta (b. 28 May 1872), died as toddlers.

Marion farmed in Stark County while raising his family. By 1870 he owned $10,000 in real estate and had $1000 in his personal estate. In 1890 he reported that he served 2 years 11 months with Company B, 115th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as a private and now has chronic rheumatism. By 1910 his son, Martin Edward, had assumed total responsibility for the farm. Marion and Malinda are enumerated next to the younger family.

Malinda died on 14 February 1921 and was buried in the Kountz Memorial Cemetery.

In the 1930 US Census of Stark County, 89 year old Marion is enumerated as a widower and the father-in-law of William Berger. He is the grandfather of Grace Berger, the daughter of his son, Martin, and the wife of William Berger.
