HARKLEROAD BROTHERS

When Andrew and Arthur Harkleroad retired in 1971 after spending 48 years in the business activities of Bluff City, a tradition disappeared. Beginning on December 9, 1922, Harkleroad Brothers sold general merchandise, feed, seed, produce, and dry goods to this farm community.

In the earlier years the business operated in a rented building, but when the Bluff City Hotel was destroyed by fire in the 1930's, Harkleroad Brothers bought the property. A brick building was constructed on the site and later housed a significant business venture, Bluff City Pharmacy.

Very much a part of the community, the operators often went beyond the call of duty to accomodate a friend. On one occasion, for example, they ground a deer into deerburger for Troy L. Mann.

From the sale of the first ton of fertilizer in the spring of 1923 until the Harkleroad brothers locked their doors for the last time nearly fifty years later, this locally owned business was a highly respected Bluff City enterprise.
