John C. Defebaugh was born in Bedford county, Pennsylvania, August the
13th, 1809, and departed this life January 20, 1894, at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 7 days.
He was married to Isabelle Barndollar, and moved to Effingham county, Illinois, in the year 1840, where he resided until his death; and was buried in the Old Freemington [sic] grave yard, near his home, on Monday, January 22d.
He leaves his aged companion and six children to mourn his loss; one child having proceeded him to the world beyond. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. W. Alspach,
at the old homestead.
A large concourse of friends and relatives followed the remains to their last resting place.
Mr. Defebaugh was once thought to be the wealthiest man in Effingham county, and his word was considered as good as his bond.
But being a man of such a generous disposition, would sell goods or property to the poor on time, taking their notes, which very many failed to pay; as he never went to law, probely [sic] never sued a man in his life.
At one time he showed us accounts and notes that amounted to many hundred dollars, that he held on persons that were able to pay, but the obligations were out lawed, and the old man through his own generosity was in straightened
circumstances.
We often wondered what kind of elastic concience [sic]
such persons had, that knew that in his old days when he was scarcely able to be around, had to labor.
For several years past his mind failed, and he became helpless and childish."
