In 1954 Margaret Bergdal Ostwall stated: Times were poor in Sweden when they left. Mr. Ostwall received a ticket to Newfoundland from the company he had worked for 18 years and he arrived in Newfoundland hoping to work in a lumbermill as he had in Sweden. Timber was poor in Newfoundland when they arrived so, with their own money, they came to Norway, Michigan where he and his son worked in the mines.

From the Iron Mountain News, Friday, March 16, 1911: JOHN OSTWALL, 72, died at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home in Norway, Michigan following a two months illness. Mr. Ostwall was born in 1859 in Norway (Europe). He was married in 1884 in Sweden & in 1900 came to this city. Six children were born to the Ostwalls, four of whom are living. They are Mrs. Bessie Matsson of L'Anse, Herman Ostwall, James Ostwall & Mrs. Ellen Anderson, Norway. His widow also survives.

He died from miner's lung disease.
