He was a Scot from the Orkney Islands who had served in the Napoleonic wars and received a pension for his services.

Married Susanna Strickland April 4, 1831 in St. Pancras Church, London. And in 1832 set sail for Upper Canada.

The Moodies moved to Belleville in 1839 when John Moodie was appointed the first Sheriff of the newly formed Hastings County. John resigned from his job as Sheriff in 1863.
