Second Lieutenant, 029367, Headquarters Company.

Feb. 19 only, participated in action against the enemy on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands. Feb. 20, Killed In Action; Feb. 25, remains interred in plot 1, row 4, grave 68 at the 5th Marine Division Cemetery, Iwo Jima.
(Transcribed muster rolls for February and March 1945 from Robert E. Allen book, “The First Battalion of the 28th Marines on Iwo Jima: A Day-By-Day History”)
Remains subsequently moved to Arlington National Cemetery.
Francis was born May 17, 1923, the same day his mother Frances Trenholm (Capers) Towers died. I don’t think it would be a big stretch to assume she died in child birth and Francis’ father, Frederick, named his new son after his wife.
In 1930, Francis was staying in Hawaii with his uncle Ralph Stover Keyser (FAG memorial # 48770051) who was married to his mother’s sister, Charlotte (Capers). Ralph was an Officer in the U.S. Marines at that time. He won the Navy Cross in WWI and went on to become a Major General dying in 1955 and buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
In 1940, Francis was living with his father and stepmother, Dorothy, and his half siblings Fredrick and Judith in Washington D.C. where his father was a lawyer with his own practice.
