Elbert Richard Doane was born on Nov. 19, 1917, at Ainsworth, Neb., to Bert J. and Lillie (Brunner) Doane. He graduated from high school at Bancroft, Iowa in 1936, and in 1937 the family moved to a farm south of Thornton, Iowa.
On Feb. 18, 1939, he married Bernice Smith in the Methodist parsonage in Hampton, Iowa, and they continued farming in the Thornton area.
Elbert enjoyed listening to the radio and loved nature. Traveling and camping in the western half of this country, along with spending the winters in south Texas were highlights of his life. In his working years he liked the cattle industry and farming. He was a member of Farm Bureau.
