Gilbert's father had 19 children born from his three wifes. Gilbert was one of 13 children born to his father and mother, Adam R. and Elizabeth Beebe Campbell (third wife). Four of the 19 children died at birth or within a few days.

When Gilbert married Lydia Mae Anderson on 21 April 1919, she was a widow with four children:

Marie Anderson 1907-1981
Daniel Gilbert Anderson 1909-1989
Glenn Hargraves Anderson 1912-1993, Memorial# 14008238
Venna Mildred Anderson 1916-1997

Gilbert and Lydia then raised the four children.
