Mr. Atkins was born Jan. 10, 1937, in Shenandoah, and was the son of the late Albert and Nellie Atkins.
He graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1956. During his school years, he ran track and played football.
In 1957, Bob started to work for Potomac Edison as a meter reader/collector in the Shenandoah area. He also worked as a meter reader/collector in the Blue Ridge area before being named apprentice lineman in 1964. He progressed through the lineman ranks and earned first class status in 1967. In 1975, he advanced to lead lineman, a position he held until his retirement in 1992.
He is survived by his former wife of 35 years and mother of their two children, Judith Stallard Cubbage of Stanley; two sons, Larry Bruce and wife, Donna Kay, of Stanley, and Jeffrey Lynn and wife, Valerie Renee, of Stanley; three grandchildren, Wesley Bruce and wife, Lisa Ann, of Lititz, Pa., Adam Lee of Harrisonburg and April Renee Robbins and husband, Stephen, of Morgantown, W.Va.; one stepgrandchild, Brianna Renee Lucas; two great-grandchildren, Evelyn Ann and Amelia Bryce; and a beloved companion of two years, his dog, Prince. Bob was preceded in death by his brother, William A. Atkins.
The Rev. Charles Turner will conduct the funeral service Thursday, March 14, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Blue Ridge Funeral Service, located at 2039 U.S. 211 West in Luray. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends Wednesday at Blue Ridge Funeral Service from 6 to 8 p.m.
